The New Agent's Guide to Starting a Real Estate Career in Indiana

Plain-language definitions and a real-world look at what your first ninety days as a Scheetz agent actually feel like.

Glossary: Words You'll Hear in Your First Month

Pre-Licensing Course

The 90-hour education program Indiana requires before you can sit for the broker exam. It covers real estate law, contracts, financing, ethics, and the basics of how transactions work. You can take it online and on your own schedule. Think of it as the foundation everything else is built on.

Post-Licensing CE (Continuing Education)

After you get your license, Indiana requires additional continuing education hours to keep your license active. The first round of post-licensing CE happens within your first two years. At Scheetz, our Launch 21 program is designed to fulfill this requirement while also being genuinely useful — not just a box to check.

Non-Competing Manager

A sales manager whose only job is to coach and support the agents on their team. They don't carry their own listings, so they're never competing with you for clients. When you call them with a question, their full attention is on helping you succeed.

Listing Central

Scheetz's in-house administrative team that handles the back-office side of a listing — MLS input, sign orders, lockboxes, paperwork, and compliance. Instead of spending your first weeks learning every form, you get to focus on talking to clients while Listing Central handles the rest.

Transaction Management

A licensed Transaction Manager (TM) shepherds your deal from accepted offer to closing — tracking inspection deadlines, financing contingencies, addenda, and the dozens of small steps that can derail a contract. Having a TM on your side means fewer mistakes and a much smoother first transaction.

CRM (Customer Relationship Manager)

Software you use to organize every contact, lead, and client conversation. A good CRM reminds you to follow up, tracks where each lead came from, and keeps notes from your last conversation so nothing falls through the cracks. It's the single most important tool for building a sustainable business.

Sphere of Influence

The people who already know you — family, friends, former coworkers, neighbors, the parents on your kid's soccer team. Your sphere is the most natural source of your first transactions because people prefer to work with someone they trust. A big part of early training is learning how to communicate with your sphere without feeling pushy.

Company-Generated Leads

Buyer and seller leads that the brokerage provides to its agents — usually through national programs, paid online sources, or relocation partners. Company-generated leads bridge the gap while you're building your own pipeline, so you're not waiting months for the phone to ring.

Split (Commission Split)

How commission on a closed deal is divided between you and your brokerage. Splits vary by company and often improve as you produce more. A higher split isn't always better — what matters is what you get for the brokerage's share: training, leads, marketing, support, and tools that help you close more deals.

What Should Your First 90 Days Look Like?

Weeks 1–4: Pre-Licensing. You enroll in the 90-hour online pre-licensing course and start working through it at your own pace. Most students wrap it up in four to eight weeks. During this stretch we stay in touch, answer questions, and start introducing you to the Scheetz team so you're not walking in cold on day one.

Weeks 5–8: Exam + Launch 21. You pass your exam, activate your license, and join the next Launch 21 cohort. Launch 21 is our 8-day in-person training led by our in-house Director of Training. You'll role-play listing presentations, learn how to use our CRM, and build the script and systems you'll actually use with your first clients.

Weeks 9–12: First Leads, First Conversations. You start receiving company-generated leads through iLeads, Opcity, and relocation. You begin systematically working your sphere of influence with the messaging you built in Launch 21. Listing Central is set up to support your first listing, and a Transaction Manager is ready to walk you through your first contract step by step.

Beyond 90 Days: Ongoing coaching, business planning, and accountability check-ins keep you on track. Scheetz isn't a brokerage that hands you a login and disappears — we stay in your corner for the long game.
